![]() ![]() Here is a quote from the Israel Institute of Biblical Studies on this place in Bethany. One of the hallmarks of this community is their devotion to serving the poor and caring for the sick. Since Mary and Martha lived in Bethany, it is possible they belonged to a Jewish sect known as the Essenes. They were possibly part of a Jewish sect called the Essenes. I am not sure how this relationship formed or developed, but we know these people were special to Jesus. We see this especially when Lazarus dies and Jesus’ emotional response when he arrives at the tomb of Lazarus. This relationship extended not just to Mary and Martha but also to their brother Lazarus. They truly held a special place in his heart. What this tells me is that Jesus had more than just a casual relationship with Mary and Martha. However, there are very few places in Scripture that highlight this level of love on such a personal level. We know that Jesus loves everyone because that is his nature. Perhaps the most obvious thing to know about Mary and Martha in the Bible is they were loved by Jesus. When we choose to believe that Jesus is God and that He saves us from sin, then we can have eternal life, even if we died on Earth."Now Jesus loved Martha and her sister and Lazarus." – John 11:5 What can we learn from Jesus and Lazarus? Jesus said that HE was the Resurrection and the Life. And when bad things happen we need to ask the hard question: How will God glorify Himself in this situation? And when God is glorified, people then believe. Jesus stayed on that cross because He loves you. But Jesus said that the death of His friend happened so that glory would be given to God. Sometimes we have a hard time believing in Jesus. And then there were the others who went to the Pharisees. He is BEYOND what is natural in our eyes.Īfter Jesus raised Lazarus from the dead, many people believed that Jesus was the Son of God. He could have gone **POOF** and disappeared whenever He wanted. Not only does Jesus control who lives and died, but He controlled whether or not HE lived or died. Jesus showed people that He controlled life and death. In this event, Jesus raised someone from the dead. ![]() The more we learn, the more we realize there is more TO learn. But the truth is, there is no way we can EVER know enough about God. People, you, me, scientists, like to think they have God all figured out. The more we learn, the more we understand this experiment. It’s even more interesting once you figure out WHY the colors move. Watching the colors swirl and move is really neat to watch. ![]()
